So we went there and, sure enough, my sister found the perfect boots. Front Porch Forum ““ An Underutilized Community Resource in NEK

Lost your pet? Need to sell or borrow something? Looking for service provider recommendations or starting your own small business and want to spread the word? Front Porch Forum (FPF) can help with all these things and more.

I recently moved to the NEK from central VT where FPF provided me a long daily listing of local information, neighbors needing or providing resources, free items, school and selectboard updates and more.

FPF is only as good as the people using it. To be a great resource, a healthy percentage of a town or towns’ residents need to join and use it.

We are lucky in Vermont to have this FREE resource available in every community!

In some communities as many as 90% of residents participate, but in Essex and Orleans County the average participation is less than 20%.

Because we are more rural and isolated than other parts of the state, having an active FPF is even more beneficial.

How do you use your local FPF?

Today, thanks to Front Porch Forum, I traded four aloe plants and six pint mason jars for a bag of kale and four jars of homemade pickles and salsas. Awesome.

In the last year, I’ve gotten free fencing for my pea plants, free plastic containers for freezing veggies, two free garden hoses, a free cat scratching post, and a bunch of recommendations for plumbing and heating contractors; I’ve given away lettuce and paint and ski tickets, moving boxes and lumber scraps and pallets, sold a fridge and a washer and dryer, and reunited someone with a large amount of cash found on the sidewalk.

Dang. Front Porch Forum is totally worth the $30 I contributed on Monday. I hope other folks enjoy this service as much as I do, and consider donating to keep it going.

How do I love thee, let me count the ways

Huge shout out to Front Porch Forum. Over the years we have used it to:

Borrow a neighbor’s ladder to reach higher up our cherry tree in exchange for some cherries

Get a free dog crate to go pick up chickens and then pass on that free dog crate to a new home

Know of bobcat or bear sightings in our neighborhood to close up the chicken coop

Ross found a job

Recommend and find great service providers (trash pick up, window washing, tree service, etc.)

Get a heads-up on great upcoming community events

This weekend David got a free bed for a previously homeless person setting up housing

It is such a great community resource. Win/win/win.
