FPF available in 60 #VT towns

Posted on Monday, January 10, 2011 by 4 comments

Don’t miss this Vermont-original community-building opportunity.
Another dozen Vermont towns can now benefit from Front Porch Forum thanks to e-Vermont, the Community Broadband Project, and the Knight News Challenge.

Front Porch Forum (FPF) was created in 2006 in Burlington and now more than 23,000 households subscribe across 60 Vermont towns.

If you live in one of the towns listed below, SIGN UP for your community Front Porch Forum today at: http://frontporchforum.com.  Join in the conversations that are already happening in your community.

Also, please let friends and family in these Vermont towns know that Front Porch Forum is available, and encourage them to sign up!  Only through more participation, will these towns realize the full community-building benefits of FPF.  To sign up go to: http://frontporchforum.com

Why join Front Porch Forum?
FPF hosts online neighborhood/town forums where nearby neighbors connect and get involved in their local community.  In this era of busyness and individual isolation, where it’s hard to find volunteers for local committees and people increasingly don’t know their neighbors, Front Porch Forum helps people meet those around them and talk about issues.  And it’s free to residents in any of the Vermont communities below.

What if your town is not on the list?

It takes a village…

Thanks to the thousands of local folks across 50 Vermont towns who make Front Porch Forum work with their participation, recruiting of friends, constructive feedback, and financial support. Through this year’s annual FPF supporting-member campaign, neighbors kicked in an amazing $18,000. These funds are already being plowed back into FPF to maintain, improve and expand our service in Vermont. Thank you!

For all who have asked, yes, we welcome contributions toward our 2010 $20k goal until Dec. 31…

It takes a village…

Question for FPF… why do you solicit funds from your subscribers?  And, I thought you landed a grant recently.

FPF Response… The four employees of Front Porch Forum provide a free service to 20,000 Vermont households… this takes money.  We raise most of those funds through ad sales to local Vermont businesses (thank you sponsors!).  Much of the balance comes from voluntary member contributions.  Please disregard the request if it’s not a fit for you. Some people get hundreds and even thousands of dollars of value out of FPF and they’re glad to contribute a fraction of that back our way to keep things running smoothly… but we don’t get that income unless we ask.  Please consider pitching in!

And, yes, we did recently win a highly competitive Knight News Challenge award.  Those funds, once received, will be used as one-time capital to rebuild our software to bring new features to our subscribers and allow us to expand to more communities (our existing software is constrained on these fronts).  The Knight award is not intended to cover operating expenses incurred by our ongoing service.

Thanks to those who have asked.  I hope FPF proves valuable to all our subscribers.  This requires the help of many.  Here’s how you can pitch in…

FPF’s mission is to help neighbors connect and build community.  THANKS!!
