#BTV #FPF – Here’s some of LifeEdited’s look at Front Porch Forum from yesterday…
According to the US Census Bureau, the average American moves 11.7 times in his or her lifetime. As the average life expectancy of that same citizen is 78.2 years, most Americans will move every 6.68 years.
It is perhaps this peripatetic lifestyle and an ever-accelerating pace of life that leads many of us to live those 7 or so years without getting to know our neighbors. We don’t know their names and we don’t rely on them”“i.e. the original collaborative consumption.
A website called Front Porch Forum is making getting to know your neighbors just a little easier. The site is like the front porch or town square where people voice their needs, opinions, services”“pretty much anything. Your particular forum is determined by your street address and unlike a community site like Craigslist, it is not anonymous. There are real names of real people who live really near you. Unlike Yahoo or Google Groups, you don’t need any special interests”“just an address.
One of the site’s FAQ’s is “Has it really come to this? Using computers to talk to people next door?” The answer, they believe, is yes. Here’s what they claim:
“In one rural town, we found that half the community had subscribed to FPF after one year and, remarkably, 66 percent had posted. In another study in Burlington, Vt., where half of the city subscribes to FPF, 90 percent reported that their local civic engagement had increased due to this online service.”
Their site includes a sample of posts”“things like “Found watch ““ yours?” and “Audubon summer day camp scholarships available.” The kind of casual stuff you’d chat with a neighbor about. Though we cannot attest to it personally, we imagine this online interaction would serve as a catalyst for face-to-face communication…
About LifeEdited…
LifeEdited shows how to design your life to include more money, health and happiness with less stuff, space and energy. It’s life. Edited.
Since 1950, the average American consumes 6 times more energy and carries 24 times more personal debt. He uses 3 times more living space, but still doesn’t have enough room to store his stuff, a fact made clear by a $22B personal storage industry. Despite this excess (or perhaps because of it), we find ourselves no happier than we were 60 years ago. Most of us realize it’s relationships and experiences”“not possessions”“that make us happy. Why don’t we design our homes, products and lifestyles accordingly?
LifeEdited is answering those questions directly. It started in 2009 when Graham Hill, founder of Treehugger.com, launched a competition to design his compact New York City apartment, making it into a living embodiment of the “˜edited’ lifestyle. Following Hill’s popular TED talk about the apartment, he realized he wasn’t the only one craving a better, simpler life.

When sharing our thoughts on email
Rather than over an ale,
Keep kindness in mind
And I think we will find,
With goodwill, our forum can’t fail.
#VT – This is a thank you to the guy who returned my lost kayak, to his friend who saw my posting about it on Front Porch Forum, and to FPF itself. I have my little red boat back, and I also got a wonderful boost in my faith in the goodness of people. FPF is a great service, and yes, I am now going to donate to help support it. -Mollie
#BTV #VT – Thank you Front Porch Forum friends. After reading your posts. I started checking and found that starting yesterday someone started charging large amounts to one of my cards. I will be filing a police report as soon as I get a statement from the bank. Very scary. I think I will increase my monthly donation to FPF for performing such a vital service to the community.
That’s from Marie to her Richmond FPF today. Lots of folks there are sharing their recent stories of credit/debit card misuse and fraud in this one small Vermont town. What’s going on? Here are some of their stories…
My debit card number was also recently stolen. I noticed 3 seperate unauthorized charges while reviewing my statement via online banking. I’m currently in the process of disputing these charges through my bank. With the considerable number of instances of this locally I’m wondering if this is the result of a bank hacking. Is anyone else with this issue a TD Bank customer?UPDATE 2: Natural Provisions posted on the Richmond FPF today a lengthy description of all the steps it’s taken to protect its customers.
UPDATE 1: More shared among neighbors on the Richmond Front Porch Forum (1,300 FPF members out of the 1,600 households in town)…
#VT – Lausanne lost access to her Front Porch Forum for a some weeks recently due to technical difficulties on her end. She’s back on board now and shared this with us today…
You don’t know what you’ve got ’til its gone!” I’m grateful to be back in the FPF loop… I’ve already gotten a bunch of chickens that someone had up for grabs! FPF you ROCK!
#VT – From Kim in Essex Junction today…
What an incredible resource Front Porch Forum is! I sought two strong bodies to move some furniture, and two fabulous, strong, careful (and cute) men came to my rescue! What a wonderful neighborhood Countryside is!
#VT – From Jenni tonight on Front Porch Forum…
I wanted to share my experience with some local teens the other day. I parked at Martin’s Hardware and saw a man get in his truck. I noticed that he had a flat tire and wasn’t aware of it so I told him. He seemed a little nervous and upset and wondered how he was going to get it fixed because he was alone and not able to do it himself. I knew I would not be of much help so I asked him if I could call someone for him to come help, he really wasn’t sure what to do. I noticed a young man I have known for quite a while with two of his friends and I asked them if they could come help this man get his tire changed. They all jumped right in with the tools the man had in his truck and got the tire changed in not time at all.
I want to thank Linwood, Justin and Alex for being there to give a hand when someone was in need. They were all very kind and polite!
#BTV #VT – I just wanted to thank my neighbors on Ward Street for their help in recovering our stolen canoe. Within an hour of my original Front Porch Forum post, I received several emails from folks in the neighborhood with information that helped us recover the canoe and will hopefully help us find the perpetrator. Thanks again.
That was just posted from John in Burlington’s ONE West FPF. His canoe was stolen right off the roof of his truck yesterday. Happy ending.
#VT – From Nora today on Front Porch Forum…
A note to the Middletown Springs flower fairy, whoever you may be… Herb and I came home from an errand to Rutland a few days ago, to find a huge bouquet of flowers on the porch. They are now gracing our dining table and we hope you will come have something cool to drink and sweet to eat at that table with us soon.
Thank you SO much for your colorful and bounteous gift! Once again, we are most grateful for our Middletown neighbors and friends.
