Guide dog training, help after stolen bike, and paying it forward in Williston

I cannot thank Michael Wood-Lewis for creating the Front Porch Forum! It has been ever so helpful to me and my family.
When my granddaughter was raising her second puppy to be a guide dog she needed a cage for him and 3 people responded . By the way he became a narcotic – sniffing dog instead. Her first puppy went on to be a guide dog for a woman athlete and traveled the world and was also guest on the ABC Morning Show.
When this same granddaughter had her bike stolen recently when at work at college in GA the FPF people came thru for her! Two generous people responded with free bikes for her. Her family was ever grateful!
This reminds me of another happy time I want to share with FPF readers. Last month our son took 4 family members out to dinner to celebrate our grandson’s birthday at a local restaurant. A stranger paid for their dinners!
With all the horrible happenings in the world today I wanted to share something special and uplifting. It goes to show human kindness is still alive and well. Thank you special people!

Ski bike, ski chair, chariot… what did you do during winter break week?

“Thanks to donations from our neighbors, instead of bored teenagers playing video games this winter break week, we have exhausted teenagers, spending hours outdoors, smiling and laughing. Last week I took a car load of boys around town to pick up items in response to my sons FPF request for free stuff to “create with”. They were so excited with their treasures and immediately set to work designing, cutting, tinkering, and testing. Ten dollars (nails and bolts) and four days later, after hours in the garage, we have ski bikes, ski chairs, chariots, a mini bike that runs (sometimes/sort of/mind of it’s own), rock skis for this lack of snow winter, and some happy boys looking forward to the rest of vacation. Teenagers hiking a mountain to ski bike down at 10AM on a Saturday is a perfect example of the power of our community and Front Porch Forum. Thank you to all who responded.”

We vote for town positions and officers on Tuesday, 3/1, and by law they can’t speak up about why they are running during our Saturday town meeting. Would it be worth coming in a little early, say noon, to be able to share why you should be voted in? Town Meeting officially starts at 1:00. What do you all think?”

Vermont radon program reaches annual goal in just two weeks by using FPF

Typically, the Vermont Health Dept. devotes a lot of staff time and resources to meeting its goal of distributing 2,000 radon test kits per year. Following its recent Front Porch Forum posting, the Health Dept’s Radon Program received more than 2,100 radon test kit requests in just two weeks.
The effectiveness of this outreach will allow the State to focus on other important initiatives to protect Vermonters from the health risks posed by radon.
The State estimates that for every 2,000 radon test kits distributed, there will be approximately 10 fewer cases of radon-related lung cancer as people identify and fix radon problems in their homes.

Butterfly effect ripples across Jericho… and beyond?

This is what it means to be part of a village.
Last summer, one very hot day, I was riding my horse down Dugway Road trying to stay in the shady spots. We came across a lovely young girl and her mother picking berries in their yard. The child was, of course, excited about picking fresh berries and having a horse come up to say hello. She offered me some of the refreshing berries they just slaved after amongst the thorns. That kind gesture stayed with me a long while.
This year, during a nasty, icy, rainy day, I promised to drop off some no-longer-used ski equipment to an FPF woman who posted a need. As I pulled into the driveway on Dugway Road, I realized this was the very house that shared their berries with me, and while I was trudging through the icy, slushy driveway that memory came back to me and warmed me up all over again. I’m still smiling from that and so happy I was able to return the kindness.
You never know what small gesture will start a butterfly effect and spread throughout the neighborhood-town-country-world. Thanks to FPF for doing it ONCE AGAIN!
