What’s your reason for learning accordion?

Posted on Saturday, March 5, 2016 by No comments yet

“I want to learn to play the accordion for all the usual reasons. (Tired of letting the family bagpiper get all the attention. Daughter doesn’t have any reason to roll her eyes at me. Will need new occupation following post-election relocation.) If you are, or know of, an accordion teacher, please contact me.”

Ski bike, ski chair, chariot… what did you do during winter break week?

Posted on Friday, March 4, 2016 by No comments yet

“Thanks to donations from our neighbors, instead of bored teenagers playing video games this winter break week, we have exhausted teenagers, spending hours outdoors, smiling and laughing. Last week I took a car load of boys around town to pick up items in response to my sons FPF request for free stuff to “create with”. They were so excited with their treasures and immediately set to work designing, cutting, tinkering, and testing. Ten dollars (nails and bolts) and four days later, after hours in the garage, we have ski bikes, ski chairs, chariots, a mini bike that runs (sometimes/sort of/mind of it’s own), rock skis for this lack of snow winter, and some happy boys looking forward to the rest of vacation. Teenagers hiking a mountain to ski bike down at 10AM on a Saturday is a perfect example of the power of our community and Front Porch Forum. Thank you to all who responded.”

Frozen pipes and helpful neighbors in Waterbury

“Thanks to all that responded to my plea for help with frozen pipes. So many wrote with suggestions and names to call. After calling at least ten of the numbers, we finally found a wonderful plumber. The name is ‘All in One.’ He came when he said he’d be there, got the job done and charged a fair price. We have water after 2 full weeks. Five stars to All in One.  Just goes to prove the power of FRONT PORCH FORUM.”

Vermont radon program reaches annual goal in just two weeks by using FPF

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2016 by No comments yet

Typically, the Vermont Health Dept. devotes a lot of staff time and resources to meeting its goal of distributing 2,000 radon test kits per year. Following its recent Front Porch Forum posting, the Health Dept’s Radon Program received more than 2,100 radon test kit requests in just two weeks.

The effectiveness of this outreach will allow the State to focus on other important initiatives to protect Vermonters from the health risks posed by radon.

The State estimates that for every 2,000 radon test kits distributed, there will be approximately 10 fewer cases of radon-related lung cancer as people identify and fix radon problems in their homes.
