Cluster fly army invades Mad River Valley

Posted on Monday, March 14, 2016 by No comments yet

“I was overwhelmed by all of the responses I received to my cluster fly question! I will try to summarize the dozens of replies I received: (1) vacuum, vacuum, vacuum; (2) use any combination of crushed egg shell canisters (from Gardener’s Supply), sticky paper, bowl of soapy water, ladybugs, Riddex… ; (3) try exterminators but be careful of toxic materials and this is often a relatively expensive, short-term fix.  So the good news is that we are not alone. The bad news is that there does not seem to be a silver bullet. I have learned a lot and will try many if not all of these.  Love Front Porch Forum!”

Vermont radon program reaches annual goal in just two weeks by using FPF

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2016 by No comments yet

Typically, the Vermont Health Dept. devotes a lot of staff time and resources to meeting its goal of distributing 2,000 radon test kits per year. Following its recent Front Porch Forum posting, the Health Dept’s Radon Program received more than 2,100 radon test kit requests in just two weeks.

The effectiveness of this outreach will allow the State to focus on other important initiatives to protect Vermonters from the health risks posed by radon.

The State estimates that for every 2,000 radon test kits distributed, there will be approximately 10 fewer cases of radon-related lung cancer as people identify and fix radon problems in their homes.

Praise in public; criticize in private

13702760“I’ve read some recent public appraisals of public servants on FPF. There is an old and very good adage about this. Praise in public; criticize in private. When we have a problem with how someone’s performance or behavior is affecting us, it is best to tell that person directly, in private. Try to do it without personalizing it and assume the other is a good person who wants to do the best they can. Doing it in public humiliates and hurts people but rarely resolves a conflict.”

Burst water pipe in South Burlington… who ya gonna call?

Broken-Frozen-Water-Pipe-Michigan“When my water main burst, my first response, after shutting off the water, was to race upstairs and type “plumber” into the Front Porch Forum archive.  I called the guy whose name came up most often, and now he’s here now working to solve the problem!  I still don’t know the end of this story, but I’m glad my immediate reaction was to turn to FPF.”

Yestermorrow tuition scholarship turned down… almost!

Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 by No comments yet

ym-sign“I am overwhelmed by all of the kind offers for rooms to rent in response to my post here two days ago. Yestermorrow offers an amazing education, but with a housing budget of $500/month, I thought I would have to turn down my tuition scholarship… especially during ski season. Luckily someone directed me to Front Porch Forum, and I’ve had about 20 responses in two days.”

Montpelier Melissa’s menagerie munches… on Christmas trees

Posted on Monday, January 4, 2016 by No comments yet

“My animals couldn’t be happier with their new selection of christmas trees. The goats and alpacas eat the needles, the chickens hang out in the branches and the ducks find privacy to lay eggs under the propped up trees. AND it makes the barnyard smell great. Recycling at its best. I love Front Porch Forum!”

Home energy audit recommendations in Vermont

Posted on Thursday, December 31, 2015 by No comments yet

“Thanks to the 20(!) people who responded to my question about home energy audits. You provided several different recommendations and a few very helpful caveats, and I feel much clearer about how to proceed. This is a great example of how Front Porch Forum rocks!”
