Cow wars, confederate flags, and new businesses in Jericho
“I just have to comment about our FPF. Civil, helpful, educational, interesting, fun, and useful. Cow wars, confederate flags, and new businesses. Town problems and lost cats. The other day, I needed a log splitter. Immediately I got an offer, and when the splitter had a problem, the owner actually spent her own time to split my wood AND deliver it!!! Who thought up the Front Porch Forum? Who actually believed it could work? What a place to live.”

UFO and Catamount sightings in St. Johnsbury?
Two interesting hot topics lately on the Saint Johnsbury Area Front Porch Forum… sightings of unidentified flying objects and possible catamounts. Here’s a sample…
“Last week, I believe it was Wednesday night, quite late, about 10, I was sitting on the back porch, overlooking the Passumpsic River. Clear night, I looked up in the sky and saw something way up there, large and distinctly bright red, traveling very fast (I believe from the NW) in the sky. I mean much faster that a satellite or a plane–it seemed lower than a satellite, but higher than most jets at 35,000 feet–again, guessing here, very subjective. I ran and got my wife, who came right out…she was quite surprised. Then it seemed to get bigger and took on a triangular shape, and wobbled like a frisbee ready to fall out of the sky. Then it took off, straight up, and it was gone. Distinctly red. Anyone else see this?”

“Around dusk, I saw what appeared to be a mountain lion run across the road in front of my car. It was about the size of a grey hound…kind of lanky. It had a distinct cat head and ears. It was short haired and a long thin cat tail. It appeared grey in color, but could have been because it was dusk. Could it be a mountain lion? It crossed the Peacham-Danville Road traveling from east to west and entered to woods just north of Currier Road. It was way too big to be a domesticated cat and yet it looked like a cat.”

Public Outreach 101 in Vermont…
“I sat in a line of traffic on the south end of the bridge in Vergennes for 45 minutes this morning because they were paving Main Street. If before the construction started there had been a traffic sign or it had been posted here on FPF… I would have taken another way around Vergennes… I drive to Burlington many times a week and I never saw a sign. I look at FPF daily. I didn’t see a posting for it.”

“To everyone affected by the paving of Main Street this week, please be understanding and patient. Business owners received a letter from the city notifying them of the project. The decision to not use FPF was a mistake and for that I apologize. This project was long overdue and the scheduling came together quickly. Please do your best to avoid the bottlenecks and keep patronizing your local businesses. I assure you, everyone will be proud of the finished product.”

How to wrap a canoe around a tree…

Last evening my dog Monty and I decided to float down the Huntington River in our canoe, starting at Shaker Mountain Road. Not very far down river, just past the town buildings in the center, there is a large land slide that has left a few large trees down across the river.
After some inspection (not enough) I made the poor choice of trying to paddle the small rapid and make it under a large maple tree. Bad idea.
A large branch was just under the surface of the water and only became visible after it was too late. We were not going to make it under the tree without getting hung up so me and the dog bailed into the water and managed to swim to the shoreline.
I watched in disbelief as my canoe filled with water and bent itself in half around the branch. That was the end of that canoe’s paddling days. Oh well. Monty and I were fine.
I had two paddles on board, one of which miraculously stayed in the boat and I was able to to retrieve it. The other one, however, was no where to be found. It has my last name, Tomb, engraved on the wide part of the paddle and if anyone happens to come across it I would be thrilled to have it back.
And if you’re planning on paddling the river, maybe consider portaging around that section of river.
My boat is still in the river. I will try to retrieve it as soon as the water level goes down enough.

I sold my classic Jaguar! The woman who bought it for her husband has a place in Stowe but read my series of postings at their other home in Nassau, The Bahamas!
I advertised the car in the Burlington Free Press, Craigslist and Hemmings Motor News… Response : nothing.
I must have had a dozen on Front Porch Forum.
Getting the word out about your group yard sale
“Our families would like to send a huge Thank You to all who stopped by our group Yard Sale this holiday weekend that we held in Ascutney on Rt. 5. Many folks told us they saw the ad on Front Porch Forum. At least 5 families provided items for sale including a little guy (age 5) who cleaned out his own toys to make some money to buy a train he wants. It was fun to see him explain toys to little ones younger than him and get them to make a choice. Again, many, many Thank Yous!”

It was a presentation months in the making.
Titled “T
HIS is Journalism,” the presentation carried enormous expectations as the ending plenary to our conference that asked that very question: What is Journalism? Luckily, we had help from many whose tweets illuminated emerging forms of journalism in unexpected places.
Earlier this year, the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication‘s (SOJC) Agora Journalism Center launched the #THISisJournalism social media campaign and website. #THISisJournalism is a collection of transformative projects that challenges our definition of journalism while also serving the functions of journalism to enhance public knowledge and enrich civic life…
They go on to share summaries of a many new online services that contribute to journalism today, including Front Porch Forum.
Vermont Tick Tracker
“Just Tried Melissa’s Tick Tracker Link (https://apps.health.vermont.gov/gis/vttracking/ticktracker/2015/). It’s easy to use… type in Middletown Springs and hover the cursor over the images of ticks in our area…I know of several people–at least one here on Garron Road–who’ve run across deer ticks already this season but have not realized they could/should be posting their sightings (or bitings) on Front Porch Forum so researchers–and neighbors–can know what kind of ticks are out there…and whose lawns, woods, or pastures NOT to visit!”

Grateful for engaged neighbors in Winooski
Thank you to the folks who dutifully post our happenings, thoughts, advertisements and questions on the Winooski Front Porch Forum. Everything I have ever desired to sell has gone quickly and safely through advertising on the FPF. And, so it was again that my sofa and chair disappeared in record time.
It is time to donate to FPF as thanks, and I intend to make good on that promise. Expect my check this week. Thanks so much!
