Rather than phone book or Google search, FPF finds roofer fast

Posted on Thursday, June 9, 2016 by No comments yet

“It occurred to me how much I depend on Front Porch Forum. Phone books are pretty obsolete an not everyone has a website. Yesterday, we posted for a roofing quote. A LOCAL professional roofer came to the property today and gave us an estimate — less than 24 hours later!”

Cluster fly army invades Mad River Valley

Posted on Monday, March 14, 2016 by No comments yet

“I was overwhelmed by all of the responses I received to my cluster fly question! I will try to summarize the dozens of replies I received: (1) vacuum, vacuum, vacuum; (2) use any combination of crushed egg shell canisters (from Gardener’s Supply), sticky paper, bowl of soapy water, ladybugs, Riddex… ; (3) try exterminators but be careful of toxic materials and this is often a relatively expensive, short-term fix.  So the good news is that we are not alone. The bad news is that there does not seem to be a silver bullet. I have learned a lot and will try many if not all of these.  Love Front Porch Forum!”

Praise in public; criticize in private

Posted on Saturday, January 30, 2016 by No comments yet

13702760“I’ve read some recent public appraisals of public servants on FPF. There is an old and very good adage about this. Praise in public; criticize in private. When we have a problem with how someone’s performance or behavior is affecting us, it is best to tell that person directly, in private. Try to do it without personalizing it and assume the other is a good person who wants to do the best they can. Doing it in public humiliates and hurts people but rarely resolves a conflict.”

Burst water pipe in South Burlington… who ya gonna call?

Posted on Thursday, January 21, 2016 by No comments yet

Broken-Frozen-Water-Pipe-Michigan“When my water main burst, my first response, after shutting off the water, was to race upstairs and type “plumber” into the Front Porch Forum archive.  I called the guy whose name came up most often, and now he’s here now working to solve the problem!  I still don’t know the end of this story, but I’m glad my immediate reaction was to turn to FPF.”

Home energy audit recommendations in Vermont

Posted on Thursday, December 31, 2015 by No comments yet

“Thanks to the 20(!) people who responded to my question about home energy audits. You provided several different recommendations and a few very helpful caveats, and I feel much clearer about how to proceed. This is a great example of how Front Porch Forum rocks!”

Vermonters listen to neighbors’ business recommendations

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 7.18.49 AM“I visited Deepa’s Beauty Salon after reading a recommendation on Front Porch Forum. Thanks for the review. I also found it to be very clean, have professional staff, good prices, and great services. Thanks.”

Here’s the original post recommending this local business…

“Today my out of town friend took our daughters to Deepa’s Beauty Salon for manicures. They had an excellent experience–great customer service and quality of work. The atmosphere was clean, professional, yet also homey and inviting. My friend took off her very valuable (both financially and emotionally) wedding rings for the manicure and then left them there. Several hours later, she realized her mistake.  The salon owners met us after hours on a Saturday night and very cheerfully opened up the salon and returned the rings. We are so grateful for their integrity, honesty, and friendliness. It’s businesses like these that bring pride to Winooski. I encourage you to support this wonderful locally owned business!”

Like Angie’s List, only better… in Morrisville

Posted on Sunday, October 25, 2015 by No comments yet

“I’ve donated to FPF as I’ve found my ‘lawn guy,’ and someone to clean my chimney and repair my washing machine! I also gave away stuff that I no longer needed. It’s like Angie’s List, only better… and LOCAL! So I encourage everyone who uses FPF to donate if you are able – it is a great resource.”

“Looking for someone to hem a prom dress. Not sure about other needs at this time. Needed prior to May 16th. Please let me know if you do tailoring/seamstress work and how much you charge.”
