Aisha posted this request in the Middlebury Forum. Their message – and its follow-up – are well worth a share:
“My name is Aisha, and I am a rising junior at Middlebury College. I am an international student, and I am looking for a better bike, preferably for free or at a low cost. I currently have a small single-speed bike (kids’ size), but because of my weak right foot from post-polio syndrome, it has become very difficult for me to ride it, especially for longer distances or uphill.
“I volunteer at the Helen Porter memory care unit 4 days a week during the summer, and my bike is my main transportation. If anyone has a bike they no longer use and would be willing to donate, I would deeply appreciate it. I would also be happy to trade my current bike in return.”
Two weeks later…
“Thank you so much to everyone who reached out and offered help. I was lucky enough to find a beautiful little blue bike that is absolutely perfect for me! What used to be a 30-minute trip now takes only 5 minutes, which has made a huge difference in my daily life.
“I am incredibly grateful for the kindness, generosity, and support I received. The Vermont community has shown me how caring and helpful people can be, and I truly appreciate everyone who took the time to help. Thank you for making such a positive impact on my life!”
